Ski Hire Near Sevenoaks: Skis, Boots & Equipment For Your Next Trip

Resort ski hire is convenient. It’s also expensive, unpredictable and – if you’ve ever queued at a hire shop on the first morning of a holiday – a genuinely miserable way to start a ski trip!

Hiring your skis and boots before you travel changes the experience entirely. You collect equipment that’s been set up to your specifications, safety-checked and freshly serviced. You skip the resort queue. And in most cases you pay less than you would have in resort, even after accounting for airline ski carriage costs.

At Captain’s Cabin in Sevenoaks, we’ve been hiring skis and boots to skiers across Kent and the South East for years. This guide covers everything you need to know – what’s available, how the process works, and how to decide whether hiring or buying makes more sense for your situation.

The booking process

Get in touch first

All ski rental bookings are made in store. Measurements can’t be taken over the phone, but we’d always recommend a quick call or email before visiting to discuss your requirements and check availability.

Telephone: 01732 464 463
Email: sales@theski-shop.co.uk

Come in to book

Bookings are paid for in store at the time of booking. Bring one of your ski boots with you so we can use it to pre-set your ski bindings – this means your skis are ready to collect without waiting on the day.

Collect before you travel

Our 9-day hire period is designed around a standard 7-day ski holiday. Collect the day before you travel, return the day after you get back. No rushing at the airport, no resort rental queue on day one.

Ski

Your equipment arrives at the mountain freshly serviced, waxed and set up to your specs. That’s it.

Is it cheaper to hire skis or buy them?

This depends on how often you ski. As a general guide:

Skiing frequency Hire or buy? Why
1 week per year Hire Cost of ownership over time makes buying hard to justify especially for beginner to intermediates
2 weeks per year Hire or buy Depends on budget and preference for consistency. High-end skis are now cheaper to buy.
3+ weeks per year Buy Cost per use favours ownership except for beginners
Skiing with children Hire Children outgrow equipment quickly
Trying skiing for the first time Hire No commitment before you know you’ll continue
Factor Captain’s Cabin hire Resort rental
Price Typically cheaper even including airline carriage Premium resort pricing
Equipment quality Retail models, current season Rental-specific stock, high mileage
Guaranteed model Yes – you know what you’re getting No – subject to availability
Setup Done to your specs before collection Done on the day (possibility to be rushed)
Queue time None – collect before you travel Often 30–60 minutes on day 1
Service standard Safety checked and freshly waxed Variable

Who is ski hire right for?

Group of skiers enjoying the mountain on hire equipment

Beginners and first-time skiers

If you’re skiing for the first time, hiring is almost always the right call. You don’t yet know which ski type suits your developing technique, and buying before you have that knowledge risks investing in the wrong equipment.

Families with children

Children outgrow ski boots every one to two seasons. Hiring removes the cost of buying new equipment constantly and ensures children are always on correctly sized, properly fitted kit.

Occasional skiers

Skiers who ski one week per year rarely justify the cost of ownership when you factor in storage, maintenance and the depreciation of equipment that’s used lightly. Ski rental gives you access to current-season retail models at a fraction of the ownership cost.

Skiers trying new equipment

Experienced skiers considering a step up in ski specification – moving from an intermediate to an advanced model for example – sometimes hire before committing to a purchase. It’s a low-risk way to understand how a different ski type changes your skiing before spending on your own pair.

FAQs – ski hire and ski rental

What is included in ski hire?

Our ski hire includes skis, poles and a ski bag. Boot hire includes boots and a boot bag. All equipment is safety-checked, tuned and waxed before every hire booking.

How long is the hire period?

Our standard ski rental period is 9 days, designed around a 7-day ski holiday. This allows you to collect the day before you travel and return the day after you get back. A 16-day option is also available for longer trips.

Can I book ski hire over the phone?

Bookings are made in store as measurements need to be taken in person. However we’d always recommend calling or emailing first to discuss requirements and check availability. Call us on 01732 464 463 or email sales@theski-shop.co.uk.

Do you offer skiwear hire – jackets, suits or salopettes?

We don’t currently offer clothing hire. Our ski rental service covers skis and boots. If you need ski clothing, we stock a full range of ski jackets, ski pants and ski suits available to buy in store and online.

How does the binding setup work?

When you come in to book, bring one of your ski boots with you. We use it to pre-set your ski bindings so your skis are ready to collect on the day you pick them up.

Is resort rental more expensive than hiring in the UK?

In most cases yes. Resort ski rental typically charges a premium, uses rental-specific stock and offers no guarantee of a specific model. Hiring from a UK specialist before you travel usually works out cheaper even when you factor in airline ski carriage costs – and gives you significantly better equipment.

Do you hire snowboards?

No. We are a ski specialist retailer and do not have any snowboards or snowboard boots for hire or for sale.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for peak half-term and Christmas periods when availability fills quickly. Summer bookings for the coming season are always welcome.

Where are you based?

We’re in Sevenoaks 1 mile from the town centre, Kent. Easily accessible from across South East London and the Home Counties, and approximately 30 minutes from London Bridge by train.
